This was the first time we had stayed at Nystroms Resort. We found the cabin to be just what we expected. Our week spent there was very relaxing. The fishing , fire pit roasting marshmallows and making s’mores was wonderful. We will definitely go back!

Peace; tranquility; a great place for family fishing; just our favorite place on earth! Plus, the most wonderful hosts ever. This will be our 28th year! When we first called the Nystroms, we asked how long some of their guests had been coming there. We got answers like 25 years, and 32 years, and so on. We were like, “Seriously??  Who would go to the same place year after year like that?” We placed that call 28 years ago and have been back every year since then. There is a saying that what I do today is important, as I am spending a day of my life for it.  The time we spend with the Nystrom’s every year is time we could not see spending any other way.  Love you Marilyn.  Miss you Jack.

We have been going to Nystrom's for about 14 years now. It's on a beautiful section of Big Chetac.  The advantage of this resort is that when fishing slows on Chetac we can boat a short distance to Birch and then to Little Birch.  Nystrom's is a very private and tree covered retreat. We always stay in the very large Cabin#1 (Birch Cabin).  It is decorated very rustic with antiques and makes you feel as if it is truly your own "cabin in the woods."  The large deck lets you enjoy the view of the lake while watching the eagles soaring through trees to their nests. Our evenings are usually spent taking in the warm summer breeze or enjoying the coolness of the air conditioning. The Nystrom family always makes us feel so welcome and comfortable.  The little library that contains free ice cream really makes this place especially "sweet."

My husband and I were looking for a very last minute get away to the north woods and were surprised to find this affordable and very beautiful cabin still available. It was our luck that the owners, John and his mom, had just put the property up on VRBO recently and it seemed like a perfect fit. Prior to our arrival, John provided detailed answers to all of our questions regarding places to kayak, bike and hike and he gave us many recommendations for restaurants as well. He was already an attentive host before we even arrived, explaining what we could expect upon our arrival. When we pulled in to the Nystrom property, we were pleased to find the cabin looking exactly as it had in the ad and were even more pleased to see there were several other cabins on the property that were equally beautiful. John met us on our arrival and gave us the lay of the land, including a tour of their library, complete with free ice cream in the freezer for guests to enjoy. Our cabin was spacious and had more than enough room for my husband and I. The kitchen was well equipped for cooking and the living area had plenty of seating and had a beautiful view out the floor to ceiling windows looking out over the Big Chetac. We had all the comforts of home and saw lots of birds and wildlife right from the front door of our cabin. We found plenty to do in the area including many opportunities for kayaking, biking and hiking so we didn't spend long days at the cabin, but we did make use of John's row boat one evening and paddled out to the middle of the lake to enjoy a sunset, a little fishing, and ultimately a sky full of stars. We were even treated to the northern lights on the night of our arrival. Knowing our host, John, he most likely ordered that up for our enjoyment as well. Overall, we enjoyed our stay very much and would recommend Nystrom's to anyone who is looking for a beautiful rustic cabin tucked away in the woods. Thanks John for a wonderful stay and for making us feel like one of the clan!

Our stay at Nystrom's was wonderful. We stayed in a well kept cabin which felt rustic, yet still with nice updates. The Nystroms were very friendly and accommodating. The kids loved the library area (which I'm sure had nothing to do with the ice cream that was located there:) We took some great sunset paddleboat rides. The resort feels nicely tucked in the woods, yet still has beautiful lake views. Located away from the busyness of Hayward, yet only about 25 min from there when looking to head to town for shopping/activities. Would definitely recommend to others.

Due to an illness in our family, my husband and I recently made a trip to Hayward, Wisconsin. Being a town of less than 3,000, we were limited with in-town accommodations, and the thought of 5 nights in a "motel" were less than appealing. I started looking outside the Hayward area and that was when I found Nystrom's Resort, three beautiful cabins nestled on the edge of Lake Chetac in Birchwood, Wisconsin.

From the moment we arrived, we felt at home with our new "home away from home". We were greeted by owner John Nystrom and visited with his mother who also lives on the property in their individual cabins. We were shown around and how things work and given a good lay of the land. Our cabin was quaint and charming, having been decorated over the years with antiques and nick-knacks. Everything we needed was provided, including free ice cream!

The first morning there, my husband had the rare opportunity to experience a bald eagle soaring right along the lake shore, just yards from where he was standing on the brand new deck. We experienced some cold weather and the gas log fireplace was the perfect touch for warming up after being outside. We cooked breakfast in the kitchen each morning and had all the necessities to do so, even a rotary hand mixer, the type I haven't used since I was a child.

I HIGHLY recommend to anyone planning a trip in the area to book your stay at Nystrom's Resort. If we ever have another chance to be that far north again, that's where we'll be for sure! Thanks again, John, for your awesome hospitality!!!

My husband and I truly enjoyed our week at Nystrom’s Resort. It is a beautiful location to do so many things while enjoying Wisconsin’s north woods. Here is a list of what we did throughout the week:

  1. Hiked on the Ice Age Trail near the Murphy Flowage Recreation Area.

  2. Paddled the canoe, that John was letting us use all week, to various areas on Big Chetac Lake where we saw eagles, herons and loons.

  3. Drove to Hayward, WI, (about a 30 minute drive), and rode our bikes on the 5 mile paved trail through town, explored the downtown shopping area and had lunch.

  4. Rode our bikes one morning for a couple hours on some quiet county roads near Nystrom’s where we enjoyed looking at lakeside homes, the woods, lakes and farmland.

  5. Attended Fred Scheer's Lumberjack Show in Hayward.

  6. Reserved a canoe with Jack’s Canoe Rentals in Trego, WI. They dropped us off at Springbrook and we paddled for about four hours to return to Trego.

  7. Visited the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway Visitor Center in Trego and got our Passport to Our National Parks book stamped.

  8. Drove to Superior and Duluth, (about a 90 minute drive). We rode our bikes on the Osaugie Trail along the Superior waterfront, then drove to Canal Park and rode on the 7.5 mile Lakewalk Trail.

  9. Had the Friday night Fish & Chicken Fry at the Pine Ridge Restaurant near Stone Lake.

  10. Walked a short distance along the Big Lake Chetac shoreline from Nystrom’s dock to the sandy area where the land extends out into the lake. With the wind making waves around the point, the sun sparkling on the water, and soft sand at your feet, it was the perfect place for a swim.

We had a busy week, but always looked forward to a quiet evening at our cabin to read, take a walk, and watch the sunset on the lake. It was a wonderful place for our vacation.

Nice, relaxing, quiet week at the lake....good fishing...clean & comfortable cabin. John was helpful when needed...respected our privacy when not. Would definitely recommend...Will book again!

Our family has been wanting to take a week and hide away in a cabin for a few years. This year we finally did it! John and Bonnie are such wonderful hosts! They make sure you have everything you need and are enjoying your time. It was quiet, relaxing and fun! The library and ice cream were both a hit with our kids. Next time we will definitely be renting a pontoon boat for a few days. If you're looking for a relaxing cabin with wonderful hosts, Nystrom's is for you!

We've been coming to the lake for 20 years and have stayed at all the major resorts on the lake but Nystrom's is by far our favorite. It's absolutely peaceful and a fantastic place to unplug and relax. We're coming back in 4 weeks and I can't wait!
